How to Write and Market E-books That Generate Leads (Part 1: Getting Started)

Are you stuck on how to generate new leads for your business? If you’ve thought of about every marketing tactic you can think of and are about to give up, then this is for you. The good news is, there is one more option you probably haven’t taken the time to consider: writing your own e-book. E-books are becoming increasingly popular, especially among businesses who are interested in a new, effective approach to generating more leads than ever before. The only question is, how do you do it? Let’s break down how you can get started on the path to publishing your own e-book.

Setting Goals

Now that you are thinking about writing an e-book to generate leads, there are a few questions you must ask yourself before getting started:

  1. What kinds of leads do you want, exactly?
  2. Who is your target audience?
  3. Do you want to draw back your current customers and have them invest more money in your services?
  4. Are you searching for new prospects who will download the book and be prompted to contact you for a proposal or estimate?
  5. What’s in it for the reader?

That final question is going to be the most important one to consider. Do you aim to educate your readers about the products and services you offer or are you interested in giving readers advice for their own businesses? Whatever you choose, you must always keep your reader in mind. If you produce content that is valuable to your reader and establishes you as an expert in your field, then it is more likely that your readers will trust you with both their time and money. Put yourself in the shoes of the reader and you’ll be more likely to come up with topics that are relevant and applicable.

Choosing a Topic

Now that you’ve answered the questions above, you’ll be ready to start brainstorming a list of possible topics that you want to cover in your e-book. The main thing you want to keep in mind during this process is how your e-book is going to bring something new to the table that hasn’t been said before. Remember, you want your e-book to be unique and different. If you have a specific topic in mind, it’s important to do your research online and take a look at what other people have already said about the subject you want to cover. That way, you’ll avoid repeating what others have already said and be able to bring something new to the table.

Again, your topic should be something that will provide some value for your target audience. A good place to start is considering what subjects you are qualified to write about authoritatively—just make sure that the topic you choose is one that will interest your target audience. If you are able to establish yourself as an expert on a particular topic, your target readers will be more likely to come to you for your advice and services.

Additionally, you want to choose a topic you can write about at length, and that will be relevant both in the present and a while down the road. Choosing a broad topic and breaking it down into sections that can become the chapters of your book is a great way to begin thinking about the information you want to cover. Furthermore, if your e-book covers information that is relevant and has lasting power, you’ll be able to re-purpose it for use on blogs and other social media outlets and continue to generate leads off of the same information long after the e-book has been published.
